One of Australia’s all-time favourite story tellers is back with a vengeance and his latest novel The Persimmon Tree will astound you. Bryce Courtenay has spoken publicly about his hesitance to write a love story and it’s difficult to imagine what he was concerned about – with The Persimmon Tree he has crafted a beautiful plot, engrossing, remarkable characters and has also woven in plenty of action and history so that his loyal readers will not be disappointed.
Nicholas is a butterfly collector stationed in war time Java when he falls in love with a half-Dutch local named Anna. Despite their burgeoning relationship, war tears the lovers apart and in the ensuing years, its long-lasting effects have not been kind to Anna. In a search that takes him years, Nicholas is desperate to see Anna again, but if he finds her, what will she be like now?
Interestingly, the title of the novel comes from the sacred tree at whose heart is ebony. As Courtenay states, it is a “hard wood that will outlast everything man can make.” The same will be said of The Persimmon Tree, which will stay with readers for a long time, and will encourage them to explore more of this master writer’s incredible tales.
